Things to See & Do in Buzios

There is a beach for everyone in Buzios, be it surfers, hippies or nudists. With approximately 24 beaches, one is spoilt for choice and the sand and surf combined with great food, drink and great partying are a heady mix. The sea on the west coast is milder, while the east coast, with its fantastic surf, is a great destination for the adventurous kind. The most frequented are the Azeda Beach, João Fernandinho Beach, Ferradura Beach and Geribá Beach. The first two are famous for their restaurants serving delectable seafood while the others are a favourite with the surfers.

If you are looking for something other than the beach, then the eclectic Rua das Pedras (Street of Stones) gathers the best restaurants, nightclubs and shops in Buzios in just one 400 meter street that ends facing the ocean.The sophisticated infrastructure in Buzios offers a large and diverse gastronomic circuit of more than 120 Buzios restaurants from fish and seafood local dishes to all kinds of good quality international cuisine. And Buzios is also the place for shopping! The small traditional art galleries are right beside the big-city brands at Rua das Pedras. Buzios is a fashion town but you can easily find a lot of good artwork, as well as many rare antiques and other unique collectables.

The great majority of things to see and do in Buzios revolve around the beach. Surfing, scuba diving, kite surfing and jet skiing are some of them, in addition to just swimming and tanning on the beach. Fishing is also a very fun thing to do off the coast, as you can catch some huge fish and then bring them back for dinner. Off the beach, playing golf, horseback riding, trekking and moutain biking are good options if you are looking for other activities to embark on.

Beaches

                                                                                               João Fernandinho Beach

Joao Fernandinho Beach

Small beach of calm and transparent water. To access João Fernandinho Beach, you must pass through her big sister João Fernandes Beach, where you can eat fish, lobsters and other great seafood from the region at its various bars. The rocky shores on the right side are good for snorkeling and scuba diving. Seagulls and White-Bellied Boobies are seen frequently in its blue and green waters.

 

 

 

Brava Beach

Brava BeachLocated in one of the most preserved spots in Búzios, this beautiful beach is formed by a bay open to the ocean, with blue-green water, mountains and pinkish colored sand. As the name implies, the beach has strong waves during most of the year, always attracting surfers. Also a great place to relax and enjoy nature, a path at the right side takes to Olho de Boi, a nudist beach. Surrounded by creeping vegetation and big walls of rock, this open sea beach still preserves the wild beauty and secluded corners.

Tartaruga BeachIt can be accessed via an unpaved road that starts at the main road of Búzios, right before Ferradura Traffic Circle. The beach has calm and usually the warmest water of the region, because it doesn't receive the cold currents from the Antarctic and has good places to practice snorkeling and scuba diving. Besides one of the greatest views in Búzios, It has several kiosks for food and drink with live music. The beach is cut in the middle by a flange of rocks where the water turns to transparent green. On the left side there is a path to Manguinhos Beach.

 

Geribá Beach

Geribá BeachGeribá is a place of beautiful and famous tanned people, who love exciting nightlife. This is the right place to know about the parties that will happen at night. One of the most famous beaches in Búzios, it has bars and restaurants where the beautiful people gather for fun and relax. This wonderful open beach has waves for its entire length, except at the left side, where the visitor will find a track to easily access Ferradurinha Beach. Perfect for surfing, bodyboarding and windsurfing, the place has charming fisherman houses besides big mansions. This is what Búzios is about.

 

                                                                                                  Canto Beach

Canto BeachLocated in the center of Búzios, it's a 1.500 meter long beach with clear and calm warm water that frequently receives winds from the East. Bordered by houses and mansions, its right side is the site of several restaurants on Rua das Pedras and on the left side, by walking on the stones, the visitor can access two other small and paradisiacal beaches: Amores and Virgens.

 

 

Armação Beach

Armação BeachSituated along Rua das Pedras and Bardot Border, it practically has no sand. The Highlights are Caboclo Island and the pier, where several transatlantic cruise ships stop by during summer bringing many tourists to Búzios. Two bronze statues are the main attractions: one honors Brigitte Bardot and one honors the fishermen.

 

 

 

                                                                                             

                                                                                              Ossos Beach

Ossos BeachAccording to local legend, this small beach was named for the bones of whales that were found on the sand a long time ago. One of the most visited places in Búzios, Ossos Beach looks like a postcard with small fishing boats and trees along its border. Santana Church and Búzios Yacht Club are located on the left side of the beach and on the opposite side, there's a track that leads to Azeda Beach. It's the perfect place for pictures and riding.

 

 

 Rasa Beach

Rasa Beach

Located at the left side of Manguinhos Beach, it is one of the largest beaches of Búzios. It has shallow warm water with strong winds that blow constantly during the year, making it good for sailing and windsurfing. With several summer and guest houses, this beautiful beach is perfect for children, due to wide open spaces for walking and getting in direct contact with nature.

 

 

Azeda and Azedina Beaches

300 meters long, Azeda and Azedinha Beaches are two of the most beautiful beaches of Brazil. The area recently became an Environmental Protection Area (APA) so all kiosks and bars were removed. The beacg is narrow, with calm and crystalline water and can be accessed via "aqua-taxi" or by walking along a small trail, both from Ossos Beach.

 

Manguinhos Beach

Manguinhos is approximately 8 km long and there are plenty of shells in the sand. Its name comes from an old mango tree. It is a continuation of Rasa Beach with several sailing clubs, such as Búzios Vela Clube and Yucas. With dark water and no waves, it is a good place to practice water sports and go for a walk. Visitors can enjoy a great sunset view and when the wind blows strong the casuarina trees bend in a fantastic way for another great scene.


Centro

The high point of the commercial district in Búzios is the Rua das Pedras or the Street of Stones. As it meanders through the city centre this street with its cobblestoned pavement bustles with street vendors, expensive bars and restaurants, boutiques and night life, which extends into the neighbouring Orla Bardot. A quirky addition to the landscape is a life-size bronze statue of Brigitte Bardot sitting on a bench and looking out at the sea.

Full of beautiful and even famous sun-tanned people, this is the place to be, if not at the beach. At this relaxed street there's always something to see or do, either you want to party or relax. This is definitely the heart of Búzios. Be warned, parking here is scarce when the partying begins.

 


Taua Ecological Reserve

The Taua Ecological Reserve is a privately owned park which covers approximately 10,000 square metres. Apart from the variety of wildlife, which includes of raccoons, agoutis, armadillos and capuchin monkeys, this park is home to 40% of the 1300 species of bromeliads found in Brazil. A number of walking trails crisscross this reserve.

Búzios Golf Club and Resorts

For a relaxed day at the greens you can head to the Búzios Golf Club, which claims to be among the best golf courses in Latin America. Designed by Colorado-based Dye Designs, the course runs through 1,000,000 square metres of greenery, valley, hills and lakes. Pete and Perry Dye have included their trademark island green 17th hole and the most challenging is the 18th hole. Visitors can opt for either a daily or weekly package.

Búzios Trolley Tour

The simplest way to see Búzios is the two-hour, 12-beach tour on the Buzios trolley. The route also covers two vantage points which nicely sum up Búzios for the traveller. The trolley's roof keeps passengers in the shade and the vehicle makes these round trips three times a day. Tickets cost $25 and include water, fruits, crackers and juices.

Coastal Tour in a Native Fishing Boat

If you feel adventurous and want to escape for a couple of hours, head towards the Porto do Pescadores at the Armação Beach and hire a local fisherman to take you out to sea. They usually charge by the hour.

Scuba Diving

The Âncora Islands, which lie nine kilometres off the coast, are perfect for diving with visibility ranges between 12 and 25 metres. May is a month to avoid due to the winds which make visibility very low. There are three reputable companies which handle everything from lessons to trips to the Islands.

An idyllic day in Búzios normally starts late and ends late. Breakfast at noon is perfect, after which you can head to the beaches for some water sports, sunbathing and lazy beers or caipirinhas accompanied by fried squid or shrimps. Return to the hotel or B&B for a shower and a mid-afternoon nap and then go shopping at the Rua das Pedras in the evening. Hit the bars at sunset and then head downtown for a meal at any one of the great restaurants. The day of course doesn't end here. After dinner you can always move on to a nightclub for some dancing. Perfect isn't it?
