Getting to Buzios

By Air

The Umberto Modiano Airport in Búzios is small, and large carriers do not land here. Smaller planes like the ones operated by TEAM Airlines do fly to Buzios from Rio twice a week on Fridays and Saturdays. The airport accommodates corporate jets too. The best way to travel to Búzios is to take a flight to Rio de Janeiro and then either drive or bus it to Búzios.

By Car

From Rio, it is a two-hour drive to Buzios. It's easy to rent cars in Rio. Once outside the city limits, the route is fairly straightforward, but you'd be wise to beware of erratic driving styles.

By Bus

Búzios is well connected with Rio de Janerio, São Paulo and other towns. Almost all hotels and pousadas will provide you with information about buses to Buzios. You can board a bus from the airport itself, the hotel where you are staying or the bus station. There are basically two types of bus services - the cheaper ones and the more expensive and luxurious ones, which are air-conditioned.

By Water

Many cruise boats and transatlantic ships anchor in Buzios between December and March. They normally halt for a day and it is possible to visit the city if your itinerary allows it. Tourism agencies can give you more information regarding this.

Getting Around in Buzios

By Car

The Buzios Gates welcomes you as soon as you arrive. This exquisite house is also the tourist information bureau where you can get all the necessary information.

Since the whole of Buzios is only eight kilometres long it is not difficult to get from one place to another. The infrastructure is very good, with signs directing you to the beaches, main roads, Buzios restaurants and Buzios hotels . The arterial road, which extends from the Búzios Gates all the way to the Ossos Beach, is called the Jose Bento Ribeiro Dantas. The same road downtown is called the Rua das Pedras, which is a popular tourist haunt.

By Bus and Taxis

If you walk five blocks south of the Armação waterfront, you will come to the Buzios bus stop (2623 2050; Estrada da Usina Velha 444), which is simple and has no building. Buses leave for Rio seven times a day and tickets cost around R$22.90. The journey takes three hours. Eastbound buses depart between 6:30 am and 7:30 am, while westbound ones leave from 7 am to 7 pm. It is always best to check the time the buses run prior to catching them to be sure they still operate at the above time.

The city buses run regular service between Buzios and Cabo Frio, a distance of 20 kilometres. The journey takes approximately one hour and tickets cost around R$2.70. These buses stop at Avenida Ribeiro Dantas, Estrada da Usina and also opposite the bus stop from where buses to Rio depart.

Other forms of public transport include mini-buses and vans that frequently make trips down the main arterial road. A guided Buzios city tour is also an option.

Taxis are easy to find and a five minute ride from Rua das Pedras to João Fernandes or Geribá will cost you approximately R$10.00.

Rental Cars in Buzios

If your itinerary is flexible and you enjoy a certain sense of freedom then the best thing to do is rent a car, scooter or a buggy because although the city is small, the beaches are not very close to each other. The best and safest way to rent cars, scooters or buggies is to do it through the Buzios hotel where you stay. Rentals are higher in summer, ranging anywhere between R$ 100.00 and R$ 150.00 per day. During the off-season they are cheaper, costing approximately R$ 60.00 to R$ 80.00 per day.
